Green Buildings

What is it ?
Green buildings are more than energy efficient buildings. Their limited negative impact on environment benefits all the actors of the construction industry: developers, investors, builders as well as tenants and operators.

Accreditation
Green building accreditation schemes like LEED, Green Mark or Green Building Index are environmental benchmarks. They provide rating systems to determine how green is a building based on a set of criteria. Several accreditation levels often ranging from certified to platinum are available based on the achieve score

Criteria
Accreditation schemes are adapted to their local context and in particular the weather conditions of their original location. They nevertheless share many of the same dimensions like energy efficiency, water efficiency, indoor environmental quality, sustainable sites, material and operations, innovation.

New buildings
Rating is based on calculated values using simulations or generally accepted methodologies as building are new. Review includes both design and implementation as final certification is often conditional to post-construction measurements.

Existing buildings
Improvements from existing conditions are easier to measure but the existing context limits the options that could be used at design stage. Improvements often focus on energy and water efficiency and incorporate operations.
